MATER (2020)
Ongoing artistic research.
As an immigrant mother and artist, most of the time I have to put aside my artwork because domestic work takes precedence over everything.
How much time do I spend at home vs. how much time do I spend at work? Does a mother's domestic work have any economic value?
With MATER (Mother in Latin) I want to make clear that within the "home economy", domestic work is equally important as a full-time job. By belonging to a capitalist and patriarchal society this role has always been neglected to the background. I would like to make this situation visible.
In addition, the multi-screen configuration reflects the multitasking that a mother does. Thinking and doing too many things at the same time. It is a map of a mother's mind and body that bears a huge burden most of the time.
Exhibited in the virtual show "Rituales Diarios" of Arte Nomada, Panama in May 2020.
