ARTIFICIAL NATURE (Microfluids) 2023
Recycled fibers on canvas, 1.4m x 1.4m
Artificial Nature (Microfluids) is a textile art piece that brings together artificial intelligence, bodily exploration, and sustainable craft work. It unfolds as a visual narrative weaving together traditional textile techniques and modern technology.
Seeking to reconnect with the human touch, my ancestral roots (since both my grandmothers are weavers) and explore the tangible essence of digital speculation, I wanted to delve into the physicality of the AI-generated image, drawing inspiration from the intricate patterns found in microscopic views of my own bodily fluids like menstrual blood and vaginal mucus.
Through manual interventions, the artwork underwent a transformative process, with techniques such as tufting, punch needling, and felting applied to enrich its materiality and textures. The fibers used in this creation were sourced from recycled PET plastic bottles, repurposed cotton yarns, and reused wool, forming a sustainable practice that emphasizes the importance of resource reutilization.
Since 2024 this piece is part of the Murzi & Morgan Collection of Latinamerican Contemporary Art.
Exhibition view in MAC (Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Panamá) 2024.
